Intense pulsed light, or IPL, is a specialized skin therapy procedure designed to improve the overall tone and texture of the skin. Usually performed as a facial rejuvenation treatment, IPL is popular because it doesn’t involve surgical skin ablation, harsh skin resurfacing, or chemical peels. This type of treatment uses specific light wavelengths that heat up the skin and subdermal layers, stimulating the production of collagen. The heat energy also temporarily constricts capillaries in areas where abnormal skin tone occurs. This can help reduce the appearance of age spots, injury scars, and other blemishes. We encourage you to consider this non-surgical alternative treatment if your facial skin condition is of concern.
How IPL Works
Some people confuse IPL with laser therapy. Lasers use monochromatic light that is highly concentrated. An IPL device uses broad-spectrum light in specific wavelength combinations. This type of lamp produces light that will penetrate through the epidermis without being absorbed. Instead, it is absorbed by darker tissue that lies beneath. The tissue heats up, some of the damaged tissue is eventually flushed from the body, and collagen production increases.
The Ideal Candidate For IPL
Candidates for this type of cosmetic treatment are those who suffer from facial conditions such as acne scars, rosacea, age or liver spots, warts, and large, visible pores. This procedure is also recommended for those who have fine line wrinkles around the corners of the mouth or around the perimeter of the eyes.
During the Procedure
The device is calibrated to send out a specific variety of wavelengths, and this allows the light to pass right through the lighter-toned epidermis only to be absorbed by darker, more dense tissue below. The device is placed next to the skin, and the lamp is flashed for a few milliseconds. The client will feel a brief sensation as though having been snapped by a rubber band. The lamp is flashed several times before being moved to above the next treatable area.
Recovery Period
This treatment requires no downtime on the part of the client. Normal activities can be resumed immediately. We may schedule a second and third treatment, depending on your situation. For the next month or so following treatment, noticeable skin tone and texture is realized because of the increased collagen production.
