What is Laser Scar Reduction?

August 15, 2016 by Pender Medi Spa

Laser scar reduction

Laser scar reduction is an option for many who have scars that they feel are unsightly. Many of these same individuals have no doubt tried creams or other scar removal methods without success before considering laser treatments. To gain a fuller understanding of how laser scar reduction works, it is necessary to have a basic understanding of what caused the scar in the first place.

Scarring comes about from the body’s wound healing process. Part of this process involves the formation of new tissue; this involves collagen, a protein that is found in connective tissue that supports the skin, among other things. Too much or too little collagen disrupts the healing process and results in scarring. Too much collagen causes raised scars that can increase in size over time. Other scars may actually fade over time and most of these kinds of scars are the result of surgery or lacerations from accidents. Acne, on the other hand, can cause scars that are actually depressed spots in the skin.

Pender Medi Spa has the technology and skill to treat variations of scars.  Both acne and surgical scars can be effectively removed through laser treatments. Scars on any part of the body can be treated, including facial scars.

With laser scar reduction, a layer of skin is removed, allowing newer and healthier skin to grow in its place. Depending on the exact type of treatment, either the outer layer or a deeper layer of the scar tissue may be removed. Short pulses of laser light reach into the sub-layers of the skin in this case. This stimulates new collagen growth with the hope that the result will be a smoother appearance.

During the treatment, the laser is moved along the scar without harming the skin that surrounds it. It may take a few treatments, but the result will be scars that are much less visible, with new skin growing in their place. Most people require between three and seven treatments to get optimum results.

A positive side of laser scar reduction is that it involves little or no downtime. It is a non-invasive procedure with little discomfort associated with it. Prolonged swelling, itching and redness are much less likely to occur. There is also a low risk of lightening or darkening of the skin comparatively to other treatments.
