Pender Medi Spa is pleased to welcome Selphyl® – a revolutionary injectable procedure for natural skin enhancement and facial rejuvenation.

Selphyl® harnesses the regenerative and reparative capabilities of our own bodies to improve skin texture and thickness, and restore a more youthful appearance. A treatment is ideal for those patients seeking overall enhancement, or improvement of problem areas such as:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Under eye hollows
- Uneven skin texture
- Crepey skin (under eyes, cheeks, neck, hands, decolletage)
- Lines around the mouth
- Lip lines (smoker’s lines)
- Lines on the cheeks
- Acne scarring
- Post-operative scarring
Selphyl® is a non-surgical treatment that may be used alone, or in combination with other treatments including: Botox®, dermal fillers, chemical peels, or laser treatments.
What it is?
Selphyl® involves the use of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) derived from a patient’s own blood sample. PRP contains high concentrations of tissue growth factors. When injected into the skin, these growth factors stimulate collagen production and new skin cell formation.
What can I expect from a treatment visit?
Treatment takes less than 30 minutes. First, a small amount of blood is drawn from the patient’s arm and spun in a centrifuge to separate out the platelets. The platelets are then mixed with a matrix, and injected just under the skin into those areas requiring correction or enhancement.
Are there any side effects to Selphyl®?
The treatment is very well-tolerated by most patients. There may be some temporary discomfort during the injections, however topical numbing cream is used to minimize this. Mild swelling may also occur after the treatment, and this generally resolves within a few days.
Since it is an injectable treatment, there is also potential for bruising in the managed areas. For this reason, we recommend scheduling the treatment at least two weeks before any major social engagement. Supplementing with arnica may also minimize the chance of bruising.
What results can I expect from Selphyl®?
Since this treatment promotes new cell growth and collagen formation, results are gradual and progressive – occurring over a period of 6-8 weeks. During this time patients will see an increase in skin fullness, smoother lines, and ultimately,younger-looking skin. Selphyl® gently blends with the surrounding tissues, making its effects very natural.
The number of treatments needed depends on each patient, however, we generally recommend a series of 3 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart for optimal results. Results may last 18-24 months, after which maintenance treatment may be required.

Is it Safe?
Selphyl® is a purified injection created by the patient’s own cells, allowing for safe and natural tissue regeneration. Therefore the body readily accepts the treatment, and there is no concern of allergic reaction or adverse effects. Selphyl® is approved by Health Canada, and is safe for most patients regardless of skin type or ethnicity.
How does Selphyl® differ from traditional dermal fillers such as Juvederm®?
Unlike injectable dermal fillers, Selphyl® is not a “product” that causes immediate volume enhancement. Rather, it is a system which allows the patient’s own body to regenerate collagen and repair the skin, gradually adding fullness and improving skin texture. Since Selphyl® is a component of the patient’s own body, it stays fluid under the skin, eliminating the possibility of lumping or migrating.
Selphyl® is often combined with traditional dermal fillers, offering an enhanced result.
Is Selphyl® the same thing as the “Vampire Facelift®”?
In the media, the term “Vampire Facelift®” has become synonymous with all cosmetic PRP treatments, including Selphyl®, since they utilize a patient’s blood sample. The Vampire Facelift® Procedure™ is actually a trade-marked treatment that combines PRP with traditional dermal fillers such as Juvederm® or Restylane®. One thing for certain, this catchy term has generated a lot of interest in anti-aging PRP treatments.
