What Are Dermal Fillers?

June 20, 2016 by Pender Medi Spa

dermal fillers

Of the various means to combat the effects of aging skin, dermal fillers are among the most popular treatments. Filler injections smooth out the skin either by plumping or otherwise adding volume to the affected area. Most often these filler compounds draw in and hold moisture. These are cosmetic treatment procedures that can be performed in a clinic or spa setting. Dermal fillers add volume in a controlled area where wrinkling is pronounced. Depending on the severity of the wrinkling and the thickness of the skin, one type of filler compound may be more suitable than others. This is why a consultation with Pender Medi Spa is important to determine the correct type of filler treatment.

Types of Dermal Fillers

The most common dermal fillers use hyaluronic acid as the active ingredient. When mixed with a solution and injected beneath the skin, the hyaluronic acid promotes healthier skin because nutrients are attracted to the treated area. The moisture that is drawn in serves to add volume, and the nutrients that the blood supplies aids in the production of healthier skin cells. This type of filler compound actually helps stimulate the production of more and more collagen.

Synthetic wrinkle fillers are a gel containing tiny microspheres. These lodge in areas where the skin layers meet the supporting tissues. They stay in place for a long time, and the result is plumper skin. Synthetic wrinkle fillers tend to fill in crease lines and crow’s feet, making them all but unnoticeable.

Determining the Correct Treatment

We schedule a consultation so that we can examine the face, note the thickness of the skin, and determine which wrinkles are set and which are non-set. We will choose the appropriate filler compound based on the location and size of the treatable area.

Long-Lasting Results

Dermal filler injections are not a permanent solution to the problem of wrinkling skin, but the results can last for a year or so. Even after the compound is flushed from the body, the skin remains supple and taut thanks to the production of collagen that results from the treatment.

Also, the skin is now trained to stay smooth because the newest tissue growth is healthier and firmer. However, repeat injection treatments are often performed on the same area, usually a year or so after the first procedure.
